The legs.

Two of the four appendages of your body that are often overlooked until something goes wrong. Pain interferes with favorite activities such as running, walking, or visiting a friend. Swelling makes getting into your favorite pair of jeans impossible. Throbbing makes concentration on your job difficult. An overall feeling of heaviness and itching is nothing short of annoying.

Then you discover the cause of these symptoms: varicose veins.

Venocure in Deerborn, Michigan, aims to alleviate the discomfort in your legs and eliminate the bulging and unsightliness of varicose veins. Various treatments exist for varicose veins, which you can explore on our Treatment page. However, today we’d like to discuss another treatment option we offer patients called Varithena.

Briefly, varicose veins or spider veins in the vernacular are caused when valves in your veins malfunction, allowing blood to pool in the legs instead of being pumped back up the heart for circulation. Because the veins are now holding extra blood, they can bulge and cause aches, pains, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, and itching. Furthermore, varicose veins are just plain ugly to look at.

Varithena is the only FDA-approved foam treatment for varicose veins. Taking less than an hour to complete, Varithena is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment that can result in improved varicose vein symptoms as well as improved physical appearance of varicose veins. No incisions or general anesthesia is required for this varicose treatment.

Varithena is a simple four-step process:

  1. Varithena, a polidocanol injectable foam, is injected into afflicted veins in the great saphenous vein (GSV) system (the name for all of your veins).
  2. The microfoam treats the wall of the afflicted vein and causes it to collapse.
  3. Blood flow is then redirected to nearby, healthy veins.
  4. As your blood begins to flow again, the foam is eliminated from your bloodstream through the urinary systems.

That’s it! You can even begin resuming some light activity immediately after the varicose treatment procedure. There are aftercare instructions that will be provided by your physician that must be followed, such as wearing compression socks and bandages over the treated varicose veins and avoiding strenuous exercise activities for about a week.

This is where a top physician certified in venous diseases is an absolute must. Venocare’s doctors are the best doctors in Michigan who are certified in venous and lymphatic diseases as well as vascular interpretation and are able to advise you as to the best treatment for varicose veins for your particular case.

Varithena treats a wide range of varicose veins in the GSV system, including tortuous or twisted veins, all the veins in the leg with either small, medium, or large diameters, and veins that have been previously treated for varicose veins. However, Varithena does not treat all forms of varicose veins, and a consultation with our doctors is imperative to determine the right treatment option for you.

Varithena, like all prescription medications, has side effects. Some of the more common complaints are leg pain or discomfort, injection site bruising or pain, and blood clots in the veins, a potentially serious side effect that can lead to death. Furthermore, the main ingredient in Varithena, polidocanol, has caused allergic reactions in patients that have resulted in death. You will be required to stay after the procedure and be monitored for any allergic reaction signs to polidocanol. Again, following your doctor’s post-care procedure directions closely will significantly reduce your chance of any harmful side effects.
